Broadband Internet, Wi-Fi and DSL: How Do You Differentiate Among All?

When you start comparing all the internet, you find all this terminology like broadband DSL and WI-FI routers and all of that stuff just goes over your heads. Don’t worry just go through this article and you’ll find the best answers to all your queries. You can go ahead and ask you ISP for this info but I’m sure that the technical jargon they’ll throw at you won’t increase your knowledge at all.

You may have heard most of the people refer Internet as Wi-Fi. While that is not entirely wrong, it's not exactly right either. Wi-Fi is just one method through which you can access the internet. There are a lot of other ways as well and that’s what we will discuss today.

First, What Is Internet?

To put it Internet is a communications network. It's a way to computers to talk to each other. Now, not only computers but many smart devices can use the Internet and talk to each other. For example: your smart-phone can talk to your refrigerator and probably tell it to not to cool anything that’s inside (Just Kidding, But yes devices can talk to each other through internet). Data (information) travels from one device to another through “Net” (Network). The language is not English lemme tell you that much. We know the language as IP (Internet Protocol). All the devices use the same language to talk with each other.

 Type of Internet Connections

There are multiple types of internet connections available at your disposal. You can choose from fibre connection, Cable Internet or satellite connection (probably wouldn’t want to use that). The most basic difference between the connections is the Internet speed. While Fiber Internet is the fastest, it is also the least available connection.

What Do We Understand by Broadband Internet?

Broadband is an engineering term which means “Wide bandwidth data transmission” but in layman’s terms it means always on, High-speed internet connection will be delivered to you via cable Lines, Fibre Lines or Radio signals. So basically all internet connections are broadband connections.

Almost all the connection today is a broadband connection. The only major difference between Cable, DSL, Fibre & Satellite is the hardware used and speed delivered. The broadband connection you’ll get will be based on where you live and who are your internet service provider.

 What’s the Meaning of DSL?

DSL, which refers to “Direct Subscriber Line” is just a broadband connection that uses your landline to deliver the Internet right to your home. Don’t confuse it with a Dial-Up connection, the DSL connection is as fast as a cable connection. Plus, you can use your internet anytime you wish to while using the Internet.

There’s not much difference between cable and DSL per se. The only reason for choosing DSL over Cable internet is where you live. There are some areas still where Cable Internet Connectivity is still not that good.

 Is Satellite Internet Good Enough?

Satellite internet is the worst type of broadband connection, Satellite internet is used in remote areas. To be frank, the speed is horrible,, but the connection has improved. The connection is still slow when compared with other connections. The reason it's slow is that the data travels all the way to outer space and comes back down to your satellite. This process takes a long time that’s the sole reason Satellite internet is so slow! There are only two major satellite internet provider available all across the USA. So if you have no other choice than getting a satellite internet connection, then you should compare both the providers quite thoroughly. Value for money is still a thing.

 What’s The Meaning of Fios?

Fibre optic connection or (Fios) is another type of broadband connection. The fibre optic connection uses high speed fibre cables to deliver the internet to you! Fibre cables are a top-notch piece of technology. This technology makes fibre optic connections the fastest internet available to consumers. However, the availability of this connection is still an issue. Being so expensive, the connection is only available in big cities. For smaller cities, cable internet or DSL line is still the fastest choice.

What is Wi-Fi Internet?

Whenever people refer to Wi-Fi, they usually mean a wireless internet connection in their homes or at business. Simply put, Wi-Fi is the way of using radio signals to send and receive data. Wi-Fi helps people in getting an internet connection without being physically connected to a device. Wi-Fi internet connection can be any connection, satellite, DSL, cable or fiber.

 The Ultimate Comparison:

So now you know that terms like broadband and Wi-Fi refer to a way of using the Internet. So you can’t compare these connections in terms of speed and connectivity. So if you want to compare and choose a connection for yourself, then first you need to figure out what type of connections are available in your area? If you can spend a lot of money and you can get access to a Fiber connection, then you shouldn’t think twice.

However, if you don’t have access to fiber connection, then you’d prefer a cable connection. It's fast, reliable, and you can use it for whatever purpose! Choose satellite connection only if you don’t have any choice at all. Read the terms and conditions of all the plans carefully because Internet service providers have hidden costs once the promo period ends. The more you understand you need for internet connection, the smarter choice you’ll make every time you switch to a new provider. Understand you needs. Do a bit of research and you’ll be good to go!
